Skipper Otto is introducing home delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Staff go up, ring the bell, retreat to a safe distance, and make sure someone comes to the door to pick up the fish,” says CEO Sonia Strobel.
The community-supported fishery is named for Otto Strobel, a longtime Richmond fisher and the father-in-law of CEO Sonia Strobel. The business was started in 2008 by Sonia and her Richmond-born husband Shaun, also a fisher.
Skipper Otto’s business model supports fishing families who need to sell their catch—as well as home cooks looking for quality fish.
Although Sonia and her team have long considered offering home delivery, this is the first time they are piloted the concept. Members can order available products and have them delivered right to their door.
The home delivery pilot project is currently offered throughout Metro Vancouver. Interested customers can sign up anytime before May 31 and start ordering products immediately.
Skipper Otto wants to engage as many fishing families as possible, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when other opportunities for fishers to sell their catch are diminished. Sonia says she gets “two to three calls a day” from fishing families hoping to work with Skipper Otto.
“Now more than ever we want to get the word out and see how many members we can get aboard so I can say yes to more of those families,” she says.
